As I recall, the great blizzard of 82 didnt start off as cold... and you see, that was the whole problem! It began on a relatively warm and rainy Saturday in late January. That warm air was able to hold lots and lots of moisture. As powerful cold front swept through that evening, it began to thunder, the rain came down harder and soon a heavy rain became a heavy snow. With every flash of lightning there was a roll of thunder that was muffled by the heavy wet snow pouring out of the clouds! As the temperature continued to plummet, more and more of that river of moisture from the gulf of Mexico was squeezed from the atmosphere. Snow continued to pile up all night, sometimes at the rate of two inches per hour until it reached a depth of 22. The winds howled in from the north all night long and created six foot drifts along open highways. My 78 Formula Firebird was ultimately buried in this four foot drift in my girlfriends driveway and yes, it was a very brutally cold morning!
