As I see it the prime reason for the lack of mutual aid we see at the ground level of society is people desire maintain their presumed superiority over those below them, this is also why some groups of people do provide minimal material support for the poor, it is a means of demonstrating just how good they are, when in truth they are merely performing a social responsibility and moral obligation, doing so very poorly I might add.
