As I sit and enjoy the peacefulness of my house and a hot cup of coffee before everyone else wakes up Im reminded of the winter Nic and I spent with Dad in Mulleys Cove. Nic was a newborn baby just a week old when we went around the bay. Everyday Id wake up to Dad listening to Open Line. Hed be sitting next to the radio with it turned down drastically from his usual level to make sure Nic would not be woken. Hed hear me coming down the creaky stairs and before I reached the bottom step hed say theres (whatever was on the morning menu) in the frying pan. Always something in the frying pan lol! Id say nope Im good as more often than not it was fried Baloney or moose sausage (GROSS). Well get some toast hed say, do you want me to make you some? Hed take Nic in his arms ever so tightly or watch him in his bassinet while I got changed and ready for the day. Will I put in some more wood hed ask, were you warm enough lastnight? The same conversation every morning. Then hed tell me hes been up since (some ungodly hour) and what hes done since being awake. Usually hed have been over to Jen Babcocks and have her shoveled out, then to Sylvias to see if Uncle D had already been there and finally check in on Nan and Aunt Viola. Nan wants to know if you are going to Carbonear today hed say, then wed argue about who was (ahem!!) fortunate enough to bring Nan to Carbonear, knowing full well Dad was NOT about to take Nan shopping!! Wait til 10:00, until the plough gets around and then take Nan up, you can take my car Im going to go for a run on the skidoo. Be careful on the roads would be his final warning, oh and put some gas in the car you are running around on empty! Yes Dad I will. That was a winter I will never forget. The reason for us being home was a horrible one as Nic lost his Grandfather Penney 2 weeks before he was even born but the silver lining for me was spending the first two months of Nics life in Mulleys Cove with my Dad who was a kind, hardworking and tenderhearted man. Life is a crazy ride!!! The simple things you do today with your kids/family will be all you have left eventually. Memories.
