As I sit here I couldnt help but think about chi and my first time meeting him. It was junior year and I just made the badminton team, transitioning unhappily from wrestling. My buddy Binh Tran introduced the sport to me and pushed me to tryout. He was my doubles partner and a very solid one too. He basically showed me the ropes once making the team. It was the first day of practice and we were laddering, I didnt know what that was but I grew to love the word in practice. Me and binh were beating people left and right and seemed to be climbing this ladder, so to speak. We found ourselves in a final for the varsity 1 spot. We eagerly stepped onto the court awaiting our challengers. Binh was warning me of the veterans we were about to play as we walk on. To me I didnt care Cuz I was winning and thought I was the shit( though binh carried Cuz he could smash and I didnt even know what a crosscourt backhand was at the time). It was then I saw chi lam and john huynh, our opponents, for the first time. Chi had a very serious yet calm look. Didnt express very much on court, it was like a poker face and I couldnt read what he was thinking. John, a very playful person who always smiled for some reason. It was a sharp contrast in the pair but they had a bond and played very well. I learned that day how advanced john and chi were, their smashes echoed in the gym, their footwork and chemistry were on point and all of this inspired me to be like them. We gave them the best we had and came very close in our scores ( yea binh knew his shit too). We lost in straight sets 19-21, 19-21 ( we played rally that day for some reason). I was so thrilled to have made no.2 and come so close to beating such awesome players like chi and john. I looked up to these guys as a newcomer and respected them greatly. They were my teammates and friends, Im proud to have met these individuals as they surly are a part of my life.
