As I was busy researching and studying about this corporate leadership, I found myself in a bit of a quandary and was hoping that my fellow leaders would be able to assist me. While going through these definitions and theories of leadership and management especially corporate leadership, I can’t help but shake the feeling that Im busy learning how to brain wash people. I know this might sound like strong language but this is the problem I seek clarity on. *Developing people vs The company’s bottom line. Imagine this, you have been working at company XYZ for a certain number of years, and one day you are called into the boardroom by your mangers and they tell you that, you have been a wonderful employee and have contributed tremendously to the successes of the company. We feel that there is nothing more we can offer you as company to help you grow and develop, so we have sent a recommendation to company ZYX, where you will be getting way more than we can offer here. I personally have never heard of such a story, most of the time it’s the employee who has to negotiate their way out of a company. So herein lies my dilemma, how do I as a leader help develop my people fully, while at the same time try to run my organisation knowing fully well that some of the development of my employees lies outside the interest of the company? If I’m learning about attracting and retaining quality employees, How to incentives my stuff, how to motivate my work force, how to communicate the company vision to employees, basically how to brainwash them to stay in the company, and be good employees is this not poor leadership? hence there are people who dont know themselves outside of the companies they work for, the day the are retrenched they dont know who they are. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that you can’t run a business like a charity or volunteer society, but does Leadership in the true sense of seeking to better and develop people to their full potential and management of a company and its bottom line fully converge?
