As I was getting ready for work this morning, I was standing by the window, in the hallway between bathroom and kitchen, which overlooks my neighbours small walled garden. Unexpectedly, and directly in my line of sight, a red squirrel appeared on the top of the wall and proceeded to walk down it. Its manner of movement was deliberate, with many stops along the way, as it seemed to be planning each step very carefully. I have no idea how it managed to cling so effortlessly to a sheer vertical surface like that. Its body was so lovely, deep brown-red, and with sinuous movements it eventually hit the ground and disappeared into some bushes. I find myself involuntarily going Ah - Aaahh.. quietly as I watched it. For those who dont know, red squirrels in Jersey are rare almost to the point of extinction. I live at the western outskirts of St Helier. The nearest habitat that would seem to suit them is a park with some trees on its far side but that is several 100 metres and two very busy roads away. There arent any natural spaces on my side of those roads. I would love to photograph or film it if I see it again but since small children play at the back of the house I cant really envisage me hanging out of the window with a camera to be honest. It made my day to see the cutest little thing though.
