As I was heading to bed late last night the kids and I heard a woman screaming & crying hysterically in the hallway on another floor of my apartment building. They are long hallways and it was hard to tell where the noise was coming from so I grabbed my gun and went outside as it was clear there was something very wrong. I slowly walked from floor to floor looking around every corner until I saw her down on the first floor at the other end of the long hallway. When she saw me she screamed and told me to run and that he was going to come after her and kill her. With one hand in the pocket of my hoodie holding my gun, I pulled my cell phone out of the other pocket, called 911 and told them to send the police ASAP. What I didnt know was someone must have already called 911. As I headed back up to the second floor looking for the guy that was attacking her I came face to face with two police officers with shotguns pointed at my head 10 feet in front of me. After they realized I was looking for the same guy they were I got out of the way, other officers arrived in full combat gear and went door to door searching for the guy until they finally found him. After listening to the woman describe to the police the horrible attack that she had just endured from her husband an ambulance took the woman to the hospital to treat her injuries from getting the crap beat out of her. As I walked back in my apartment a few thoughts stuck with me as I went to bed: #1 - Before you bash all cops for the mistakes that are made by a small percentage of them, just remember that they are the first to be called when youre in trouble. These brave men and woman last night put their lives at risk for a woman they didnt even know and to them it was just Tuesday night. #2 - Im glad I have friends who taught me about guns, why its important to own one and how to use it responsibly. #3 - After walking back in and explaining to my kids what happened, it gave me an opportunity to share something with them that might seem obvious, but seems to happen all to often in the world. To my two girls I told them that it is NEVER ok for a man to hit them in any way. To my son I told him that no matter how frustrating a situation might be or how angry you might get, physical violence towards women is not an option. EVER. I told him that if you see something happening to a woman and you can do something to stop it or protect her in some way, then DO IT even if it puts you in danger. Had that guy found her in the hallway without my other neighbor and I doing something about it, she could be dead today. BE A REAL MAN and STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE!
