As I was leaving the theater and everybody was walking out, I was trying to figure out the best way to start this review and a guy walking behind me said I just want to see Godzilla in a Godzilla movie. I turned around and said Exactly I mean what are you expecting? You want to see huge monsters fighting for no reason other than the fact that thats what huge monsters do? You want to see mindless violence and carnage? Yes...as a matter of fact i am. Well sadly thats NOT what Godzilla is. Its a character driven story featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad). The acting is fine but theyre roles should be that of supporting characters not the stars. Godzilla is supposed to be the star but he is absent for close to 80% of the movie. They spend far too much time crafting the story. You know the Who, What, Where, Why, and the How. The Who should be Godzilla, The What should be Its an Apex Predator, The Where should be Japan, at least where they fight and not in California (Americans smh) The Why? Who cares why. The How, because Godzilla is huge and because he can. The vast majority of the time we see Godzilla, he is either underwater, or it is in the middle of the night, as if Godzilla cannot be seen in broad daylight. Its very disappointing that this multimillionaire dollar film did not spend most of its screen time on the main attraction. And the movie teases you far too often only giving you a glimpse of the behemoth. There was this one sequence when we thought we were about to FINALLY get to see some real action and they LITERALLY slammed the door in our faces. Elizabeth Olsen (Mary Kate and Ashley Olsens sister) was running into a building to hide from the two monsters and JUST as they were about to collide the doors to the building close on us and the movie skips to a different scene. WHO DOES THAT? We had already sat through enough movie WITHOUT seeing both monsters on screen at the same time. We all let out a depressing sigh. The premise wasnt all that plausible either but for fear of spoiling i wont get into that. However all was not totally lost. Godzilla did pick up a ton of steam in the final 20 minutes but by that time, for me at least, it was too little too late. It was really cool when the monsters did finally clash though. Godzilla breathes blue fire and Mothra has an EMP attack. But all that came before made the wait totally unsatisfying. 4 out of 10 Afterthought: Godzillas biggest problem is that they already made this movie last year. It was called Pacific Rim, taken place in Japan with real fights, real action, real terror and real monsters. Skip the Godzilla borefest and rent Pacific Rim on Blu-Ray today.
