As I was preparing to celebrate Lyndon Johnsons historic visit to Orlando in 1964, (fifty years ago exactly tonight and tomorrow), I looked up voter turnout for that election. [That was the year Earl K Wood was first elected as Tax Collector of Orange County, but I dont know his election results] The ideal of Party loyalty had pretty much been trashed by Democrats because Johnson had by then passed civil right legislation and the old Dixiecrat Party was dying, especially in Orlando. Here are the registration numbers of the time and the results of that election fifty years ago. No stats were kept on the racial breakdown of the small Parties and I cant find the breakdown of the actual voters by race. No breakout existed of Hispanic voters, but they had been coming here in a trickle and were much welcomed by the Republicans whose focus was on Anti-Communist Cuban refugees (Mel Martinez arrived in this group). Registered Voters in Orange County – 1964 Elections Democratic Party White 78,040 Black 10,374 Republican Party White 28,333 Black 775 Others Parties Total 1423 Grand Total Registrants Total 118,645 Voter Turnout was 87132 or 73.4% Johnson garnered 38,248 votes to Goldwater’s 48,884, so Goldwater got far more votes in Orange than there were Republicans even registered.
