As I was treating a 38 week pregnant patient today, grateful that her infertility journey has brought her the gift of a baby girl thats due any moment, we talked about her birth plan. Ever heard of the Golden Minute? Its the time when the baby emerges from the womb. In 1913, doctors began immediately clamping the umbilical cord. There is no scientific medical evidence to support this practice, so just hold on a (golden) minute!! 30% OF A BABYS BLOOD VOLUME AND 60% OF THEIR RED BLOOD CELLS ARE OUTSIDE THEIR BODY AT BIRTH! Thats a third of their blood that has yet to make it into their newborn body through their lifeline, the umbilical cord. Barring any complications, whats the ding dang hurry! Wait until the cord stops pumping before its clamped off (about 90 seconds). The cord blood is chock full of oxygen, stem cells, red blood cells and white blood cells. That gives your baby strength, endurance and the ability to fight infection. This simple act can change the course of a childs entire life. My hope is that I get to share this message with each of my fertility patients at some point. In the meantime, Ill share it with all of you.
