As I watched the footage of the football player slugging his soon to be wife, it hurt. I have never been in a violent relationship - because my mom let her life be an example of what NOT to do - and told me so. Every night as I would fall asleep for all the years of my young life my mom would lie next to me saying things like, Dont ever do what I did - dont become dependent on a man for money. Dont ever let a man stand over you and hit or hurt you. Dont let a man take advantage of you... This was my moms way of preventing me from making the mistakes she had made. My dad was extremely emotionally abusive and occasionally physically abusive. I witnessed/experienced it all from the time I was old enough to remember until the day I left home. And it never got better - it only got worse - like the time he tried to shoot her in the back as she ran barefoot in the dead of winter. I am not telling any of this for sympathy - I have been given BEAUTY for my ashes and a double recompense for my former trouble - I only tell this so as to bring to the light that which has been kept in the darkness for so long. Domestic violence can not be our collective dirty little secret anymore. #stoptheviolence
