As Im listening to the radio, they are talking about children - TopicsExpress

As Im listening to the radio, they are talking about children losing a pet and then how they are able to address the loss situation to these children. One of the techniques that was suggested, was to go out and buy a new pet to replace the old one. In effect, showing the child that if they lose something, something new will come along and replace it. I ,for one, do not agree with this scenario. As many of you already know about my parenting techniques, I dont choose to take the route of deception and redirection. I dont treat my children like idiots. I prefer to use real world scenarios and techniques to educate my children on how to deal with life, not create a fantasy world for them, thinking that Im protecting their fragile little mind. I would rather foster strength and problem solving into my children rather than have them disconnect and create an illusion which is easier to handle. I feel that this creates a generation of disillusioned and unprepared human beings. Id rather prepare my children for the inevitable truth that death exists in our world. If you choose to handle death in this fashion, how do you expect your child to deal with the death of a family member. Will you just go out and buy a new grandma? I would much rather teach my children how to cope with loss and how to effectively grieve rather then teach them an unrealistic, bandaid solution. Thoughts?
