As Im sure most of you remember, two years ago, I was attacked by a dog and spent quite some time in Vanderbilt Hospital. I had to have extensive surgery to repair damage induced by the biting and ripping of the dog attack. I do not hold any hard feelings against the dog that attacked me, and I certainly do not hold any specific breed of dog responsible for what happened on that dreadful day. If anything, I am proud that I was the one who was attacked instead of my young granddaughter who I flung to safety mere moments before the attack. I have always been a dog lover. Since childhood, I have had many pets, which include a variety of breeds of dogs. I support each community members choice in the variety of pet or any specific breed of dog that he or she may choose to own. While it is difficult to speculate what would induce any animal to decide to attack a person, I am confident that the breed of dog has nothing to do with it. I have enjoyed the company of many well-mannered pit-bulls, german shepherds, rottweilers, pomeranians, chihuahuas, and the like. I most certainly would NEVER be in favor or support any ban on ANY breed of dog. This is the United States of America: the land of the free. YOU, as a community member, have the RIGHT to own whatever breed of dog you so desire. I encourage you to visit the Benton County Animal Shelter if you are looking for a pet; there are many loving pets looking for a home and a place in your heart. Animals are innocent by nature and the grand design of God. It is quite a shame to see so many abandoned and mistreated animals in our community. I AM in favor of a Sheriffs Department that supports Animal Rights! As your Sheriff, I intend to stand up for the rights of our precious animals and aid in the prosecution of anyone found to be abusing or neglecting animals in Benton County!
