As It Was...So Shall It Be Luke 17:22-37 The expression History repeats itself is evident even in such mundane things as fads, fashion, the wearying cycle of life described by Solomon (Eccl.1:1-11), and the repetitive cycle of civilizations. Our Lord states in todays text that, while there may have been differences as to the planet in Noahs day compare to ours, there are many great similarities with regard to the people (vv.26-27)-as it was...so shall it be. If God destroyed those who believed not in that day, He will do so again in future judgement. Some would deem the Lord to be unfair, believing that He did not give those of Noahs generation the opportunities that we today have to hear His witness. But they are wrong. Upon examining the question of how much spiritual light the pre-flood world had, we come to some startling conclusions. Consider the following: They had the witness of nature (Rom.1:19-20) and of conscience (Rom.2:14-15), the promise of a Redeemer (Gen.3:15), the knowledge of a sacrifice (Gen.4:4), the preaching of Enoch (Jude 14-15) and Noah (2 Pet.2:5), and the ministry of the Holy Spirit (Gen.6:3). Yet even with all that light, only eight survived (1 Pet.3:20). Just as those who perished in the flood were without excuse, so those today who persist in turning away from the light that God has provided are equally without excuse. The knowledge of God in creation (natural revelation) is accessible to the whole world. The preaching of the gospel proclaims salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ, available to all who will hear and believe. But even with all that light, so few choose life; therefore-as it was...so shall it be. Sadly, history does, indeed, repeat itself.
