As John Bowen, 18, stood outside his home shortly after midnight Monday, he could only watch through watery eyes while firefighters continued to battle back embers and flames that continued to poke through the roof of the residence. Standing in silence, it was then that his 7-year-old cousin, Bryce Castle, walked up to him, hugged him tightly around his legs, and looked up with gratitude. “Thank you for saving my life, John,” he said. As the tears erupted, Bowen was at a loss for words, and could only hug Bryce even tighter in return, knowing that just hours ago he had carried him out of the burning building.
