As Mike Fotis said, I cant believe Ive let the Cubs back into my life. I was checking in and out of Jorge Solers debut the other night, definitely tuning in for the newbies at bats. While the Cubs were down for most of the game, they kept chipping away. Down two runs against the Reds to their last out to flamethrower Aroldis Chapman, journeyman Cub Chris Coughlan (who is not one of the heralded Core Four or Future Five) somehow bled a walk to bring the winning run up to the plate - Javier Baez. With 30 games left, and 10 games out of the second wildcard spot, the Cubs are about as far from the playoffs as Im from the Pyrenees. But, I squeed when I saw this coming: Getting to see Javier Baez, who even in just 20 games in the bigs has built a reputation for having an even harder swing than what Chapman can throw. Anyway, I just wanted to share this link that does an awesome job of breaking down that particular at-bat, and shows how much fun the little games within the game are. My favorite part of this is how the author analyzes how Len Kasper (Cubs announcer) and Thom Brenneman (Reds announcer) both used the phrase Here we go... as the at-bat was about to commence: You’ll notice a repeat line: “so here we go”, like they’re about to get onto a carnival ride. Which isn’t inaccurate, but Kasper said it like a man who takes a lot of pleasure in going on carnival rides. Brennaman came off a little more nervous, a little more cautious. Brennaman came off like a man who’d spent the ten minutes in line reading on his phone about instances of people getting crippled or killed on ill-fated carnival rides. fangraphs/blogs/lets-watch-aroldis-chapman-and-javier-baez/
