As Paul and others have pointed out, there is a definite correlation between single parent families (almost always mothers) and a number of negative living conditions -- greater incarceration, greater poverty, greater welfare dependence, etc., and, of course, the African American community tends to score highest on all these factors. Those of you that have studied statistics will recall learning that correlation does not necessarily mean causation, or at least as a former stat teacher, I hope you do. In this case, the critical question is whether the disintegration of the family cause all these dire outcomes or is it possible that poverty causes family disentegration along with these other dire outcomes. It is a correlation result that is difficult to untangle (since experimental manipulation is not feasible). As in many cases of these kinds of ambiguity, data are interpreted differently according to one political orientation. All this is prelude to the article I am posting that makes a case for the latter interpretation. Since this site is predicated on balanced perspectives, I invite your reading of it. salon/2014/09/14/facts_vs_the_gop_why_america_is_living_through_a_new_era_of_segregation/?utm_source=huffpost_politics&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=pubexchange_article
