As Porthleven Fishermens Assc. I feel we ought to comment on Dales Public post. Every boat owner and fishermen had a letter from the Harbour and Dock Co. explaining the proposals. Most opted to have new chains fitted whilst the Harbour master was offering to sink them as a part of the deal. Some boat owners used their existing chains. There was plenty of opportunity to recover existing chains before the harbour was cleared. There was concern at the cost of the chains, but when these were checked by the PFA they were found to be very competitive and that the Harbourmaster had added nothing to the cost to the cost price. Harbour dues are due every year and are discussed between the PFA and the Harbour and Dock co. Obviously the PFA argue against rises, and the Harbour and Dock Co. argue for it ! That`s negotiation. As for the repairs to the Harbour, we are just delighted that these are taking place. No grant has been allocated yet and all work is being funded by the Harbour and Dock Co. If, however , a grant should become available for the long term security of our Harbour, we would support this in any way we could. Why would we want to sit back and watch other coastal communities benefit from such allocations while we watch our Harbour collapse. As for the thinly veiled question as to the allocation of the emergency fund money by one of the comments ,as Treasurer, I can answer precisely. Allocations were made to fishermen for the loss of fishing gear that was swept off the quay (in line with the many letters that accompanied cheques) Allocations were also made to those who suffered small amounts of damage (under the value of insurance excess as this fund was not to be used as an insurance substitute) It was also used to pay for carnage of vessels into the harbour. A great expense was the repair of the ice making machine and subsequent moving of hardware to prevent further sea damage should we suffer further similar storms. Some of the fund has been held in reserve as agreed by all of our members in case of further damage next winter as we couldn`t hope to expect the overwhelming support received this year again. A separate bank account was opened and every cheque was listed individually. An awful lot of work by an awful lot of people went into helping with this support. All of this information is available on our FB page or at any of our meetings if interested enough to attend.
