As Republican Congressmen fan out to their home districts during the August recess, they will take with them a document entitled "Fighting Washington for All Americans," which outlines an interesting strategy. Although the GOP holds a majority in the House of Representatives, Republicans will depict Congress as the enemy and themselves as the defenders of their constituents against a predatory federal government. The 31-page handbook is replete with instructions on the use of social media -- from Facebook to Twitter to Instagram to Vine -- to propagate the message that the Republican Party will protect Main Street from the branch of Congress it currently controls. A sample op-ed included in the media kit is entitled "Fighting Washington for You" and begins with the declaration: "Washington is out of control." The body of the editorial includes the claim that "every day I serve in Congress, I work to fight Washington." House Speaker John Boehner was working off the same template during a July 21 interview on Face the Nation in which he said Congress "should not be judged on how many new laws we created [but by] how many laws ... we repeal."
