As Sunday is so close and I have spent the last 2 days mixing with athletes, an incredible realisation washed over me... What am I doing? I am a slightly chubby, 40 year old mother of 3 about to embark on an almost impossible physical journey for me amongst people who have trained for this for years, whose bodies ooze fitness, stamina and speed. I have used up all my adrenalin on sheer terror and Im at the point of giving in when a thought washed over me... What did they do? What did dad do when his breathing was so bad that he couldnt walk to the kitchen and he had to wear a nebuliser to clear the last bit of lungs that worked? He made light of it, telling us not to worry and reassuring his grandchildren that the steam coming out of the sides of his oxygen mask was topping up his granddad powers. What did Uncle Henry do? He remained positive, telling me all of the things that he was going to do when all this was over, spending time asking me how I was and what my plans were. Always positive. And Simon? When his body so cruelly disobeyed his mind and refused to move when he asked. He used his strength on his iPad to remind us that he was still in there and when that disobeyed too his eyes told us his thoughts. His strength was infectious. The point? They didnt give up. They fought their fight until the end with a dignity and strength that for me has remained overwhelming. They are my drive, they are my inspiration. So tomorrow when I stand shoulder to shoulder with proper athletes, all of my admiration goes not to them but to the 3 men that Im doing this for. They may have lost their fight, but the battle still goes on. Enough said, so my darling Dad, Uncle Henry, and Simon. I hope you are ready as we have a date with a 70.3....
