As U.S. demographics shift, challenges continue in creating a diverse medical workforce that is representative of the population, according to a recent article published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). The author, John Iglehart, national NEJM correspondent, observes that medical schools have made tremendous progress in graduating increasing numbers of students from certain underrepresented groups, however, the number of black male medical school applicants and graduates continues to decline. Iglehart notes that AAMC Chief Diversity Officer Marc Nivet, Ed.D., M.B.A., believes the solution lies in an increased focus on K-12 pipeline programs, which currently lack enough federal support. He also quotes AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, M.D., who said, when describing the benefits of race-conscious admissions policies, Diversity is a vital component of excellence in education, clinical care, and research at the nations medical schools.
