As Veterans Day is drawing to a close, I want to take a moment to especially honor our gay Veterans. Until September 2011, officially there were no gays serving in the military. I have known gays in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and the Royal Air Force of Great Britian. I know a Gay Veteran who is now 95 and served in WWII. And I have known a young guy volunteering for the Army and worried that they would find out he was gay. One of my most treasured Veterans Day memories is when a Navy veteran marching in the Veterans Day parade left formation and ran over to give me an American Flag. I have known brave soldiers who were willing to put a huge part of who they are aside so they could serve our country. I honor and respect all our Veterans, but for those who served while gay before you were welcomed into the military, a special Thank You. https://youtube/watch?v=DLnIf0JjszY
