As a 1/4 century veteran of the film industry, Ive heard it all with respect to how some from Hollywood refer to us in Vancouver: Ice-Niggers, Mexicans With Sweaters - Im good with it - Black? White? Worrying about that was for my parents generation. Really, the Ice-Nigger thing is only sour-grapes ... were efficient & cooperative when making movies in Vancouver - the chosen ones for pure capitalist reasons - because were in many ways better at film-making than Hollywood is. Mexicans with sweaters? I like Mexicans … lived with them, been to funerals with them, cried with them and laughed till it hurt with them - people are people. Shared plight, shared might - I believe its the way things work. I believe in hedging your bets, too. I do think that Pauline Marois, and her decades long Quebecois supported ideal of Government sponsored (and French-only supported) racism by the likes of Rene Lévesque, Camille Laurent, and that drunken wizard, Jacques Parizeau, has poisoned my mind, and many like me - I lived it. The lack of support from the French community is/was, for decades, fuggin deafening. In a perfect world, Id like to see my English, and protest-full French friends, have the ability to pull the Quebec-free rip-cord, and celebrate with me in Canada as willing and proud Canadians, the coming of the Quebec peso. Ive cloudier thoughts for the oppressors.
