As a 25 year veteran primary teacher,I have found that the teaching of both manuscript and cursive letter formation is critical to students ability to read, process information, and communicate. The trend to throw the letters at children in kindergarten and first grade helter-skelter and hope they stick has created reading and thinking dysfunctions that are crippling our children. I have consistently found in the classroom that at least 40% of my students needed to be retaught the how to of letter formation in order to address their reading disabilities. 99% of the students I have re-taught succeeded in mastering reading quickly, even though it was a skill that had eluded them for years. If we intend to help our children master the skills necessary for literacy, we MUST teach them how to write both in manuscript and cursive. (As an aside I would like to share that Steve Jobs was given his vision of marrying form, aesthetic, and function in a calligraphy class he took in college. Written language MATTERS and is a skill that we must provide our children!)
