As a Martial Arts Instructor, I pride myself in empowering kids with the ability to defend themselves against anyone who seeks out to cause harm to them. Giving the smaller and weaker person the tools to overcome the “bully” is the thing I live for. But today, my heart is so conflicted with the outcome of yesterday’s verdict of “NOT GUILTY”. Trevon was profiled by the neighborhood watch man (Zimmerman) which alone, is illegal. He was simply on his way home with a bag of skittles, an ice tea in his hand and happened to be wearing a hooded sweater. Zimmerman’s perception of Trevon was incorrect and it resulted in his future being stripped away. What struck out the most to me about this case is that Zimmerman sought after Trevon, and the altercation. By chance, Trevon’s “martial arts training,” he was able to defend himself and get somewhat of the upper hand of the unexpected altercation, according to “the facts.” With this verdict, the people are saying Zimmerman had the right to kill him. ??? Only Zimmerman and Trevon were there that night, at that moment, and all that we have left is one man’s perception and version of the actual story to speculate off of and have our opinion for. BUT this outcome will now set the tone for all future-like cases. As a parent and martial artist my heart bleeds for Trevon and his family. I believe in teaching young girls and boys to defend themselves against any predator. Let’s say ‘your daughter’ was being followed in a mall parking garage by some stranger who then approaches her and harasses or assaults her to the point where ‘she feels’ threatened physically for her life…. So she defends herself… and is able to ‘dominate the altercation’…. but now this predator is able to kill her and come up with a false scenario of the actual event that took place (in his favor)… and get away with it. Something is WRONGT with OUR SYSTEM!!!
