As a bike shop guy, I bought in to the idea that clipless pedals (the kind one clips in to proving that its an idiomatic term) gave the rider more power than flat pedals. Now Im not so sure. I think there are more variables to apply, and rider style is certainly an important variable. Id love to find a study where the researchers figured out a way to measure pressure AND tension between the shoe and pedals in a way to see just how much power a rider develops (and how much that rider is actually pulling on those pedals, or whether its all perception).
