As a child I grew up angry & bitter thinking that my parents never understood me & the proverbs they told I thought were meant to imprison me n make me feel guilty for just about anything. Many Islanders will relate to this. However take note that this has only happened with the generation that to came to NZ into nothing during the employement boom. As a teenager I would rebel against my father n often spoke ill toward my mother. I for God knows what could not understand why on earth they held me down when I became ambitious. You see.... Like many parents who migrated from the Islands soon discovered 2 things. 1. There was no milk n honey. & 2. A government that were white supremists that abused our parents during the depression. You either got educated or kept running until you got your papers. Irony? Well of the over all over staying population at the time. Only 1/3 were polynesian. 2/3 were white europeans yet none of them were deported? Why not? Earlier I posted about a parable my father told me. Not to disrespect him but to highlight the mindset of many Island parents from his era. Hes the only example I can refer too. This being he was not fortunate to be educated like me. He was not fortunate to learn english as fluid as I have nor had he been given the opportunities to climb the ladder in the industry he worked for like I have. The industry that ripped him off for over 30 years. So was this parable of the rich son aimed at making me feel bad & small? God forbid. The message is this. Regardless of how successful I become, always make time for those who love you....I am no perfect son n Im probably the most strong headed n self opinionated of my siblings. The dumb thing is.. I had to leave home, get married, struggle n see for myself what its like to start from nothing. Growing up you think you know everything until youre wise enough to look back n appreciate that the struggle started before YOU.
