As a child, I grew up watching my two parents struggle to put up a house in Matawale. In fact, by the time they had both died, sums of money due to various creditors were still outstanding (which my sister and I had to pay off). But nonetheless, I grew up a privileged child, went to a good school, had all my basic needs met, and generally enjoyed what comes with middle-class life in Malawi. I suppose if my mother or my father had wanted to run for president, they would have been deemed not wealthy enough to do so. This is because in Malawi, there is an idol fetish seared on our minds. We dont want leaders who are the same as us; we want gods who preside over us in whatever manner they please. We love to worship them and their wealth; and like beggars, to be only allowed to mildly participate in their opulance. And so unconsonsciously we embrace our rugs, and endorse our poverty as we sing to our parasitic gods. Their wealth - which is really our own - makes them worthy of our adoration. *sigh
