As a child our dogs accompanied us everywhere, as did all the other kids and dogs in the area. They ran alongside us, hitched a ride in the tray at the back of trikes, sat on scooters while we raced along, played together and were totally happy to come for a swim at the dam. I dont remember many people having their gates shut, indeed most didnt even have fences! Dogs and kids learnt their neighbourhood together, knew everyone by name, knew whose tap to grab a drink from and knew who to avoid at all costs. We were all (dogs included) street savvy, were ruled by the sun, never wore shoes or hats or sunscreen, ate fresh blackberries and apples right off the tree, fell over and grazed our knees and elbows, we were tough and tried not to cry. New puppies gambled alongside the older dogs and were shown the ropes, dozed in safety under a shady bush when necessary, only to wake up and start the fun all over again. No dogfights, a few scuffles but were over in a second or two (same as the kids) none got lost, none were run over near home, none were given away for behavioural issues, all were happy, healthy and valued members of the community. What on earth happened to us all?
