As a convert to Judaism in general and Karaite Judaism in particular, some of the teachings of the Karaite Sage whom I bear his name as my own Hebrew name bring this bit of reassurance to all other Jewish converts: ...nobility of faith ranks higher than that of descent, since we find that persons of noble descent are some times demoted from their high positions because of their acts of disobedience to God. We find also that even he who is converted to the Jewish faith sometimes reaches a high position because of his obedience to God, as was the case with Jethro, who acquired a good and great name and an exalted station because of his belief in, and obedience to, God, as we have explained in our comment on, And Jethro heard all that God had done for Moses and for Israel (Exod. 18:1). All this applies not only to men, but also to women; e.g., Jael, concerning who the prophetess Deborah in her Song speaks in a manner showing that she had acquired a high station in Gods esteem, as it is written: Blessed above all women in the tents shall she be blessed (Judg. 5:24). - Yefet Ben Eli, Commentary on Sefer Ruth - Karaite Anthology by Leon Nemoy.
