As a culture, Singapore has always been obsessed with cheap and good. It may take us a while to realise that there is no such thing as cheap and great. Greatness is, has and always will be costly. If we dont see too many great inventions, art, brands, films, tv shows, food etc intellectual and cultural goods coming out of Singapore these years, its because many of us consumers and thus corporations in turn are content with good enough, like dat can oredi lah and I only want cheap and good. Why pay for professional photographer when I just jio some relatives take picture with iPhone or their 5D can liao? Why offer made-from-scratch Mee Rebus when most customers can no longer tell the difference between eating a factory-made premix and an authentic one anymore? There is nothing wrong with practical decisions made within a budget. Sometimes situations demand it as an appropriate response. But this obsession with getting away with good enough all the time gets problematic on a long term scale for a countrys culture. We lose perspective on the truth about how much the best things really cost. Behind every great thing, a high price always had to be paid. The interesting question has always been about who wants to pay it and why.
