As a digital, multimedia, technophile kinda guy, I love this because 1) its an issue that I care deeply about, and 2) because it doesnt really cite many references and it begs the question for the entire first half. (Yes, begging the question still bugs the hell out of me. Begging the question does not mean raising the question but, instead, using the presumed truth of your conclusion as part of your argument. News anchors and talk-show hosts are a terrific example of this because they do it all the time, and they use the term incorrectly all the time, while actually doing it.) Anyway, I agree with this guy for the most part. Technology is never going to replace the human teacher in the school, but technology is the forum for teacher-student interaction. It always has been—whether its a smartboard or a chalkboard. That technology has gone through many significant evolutions. The question that he doesnt address, however, is: how much of our young folks education is happening *outside* the classroom? How much has online video, file sharing, mass connectivity—things Thomas Edison mightve predicted—actually revolutionized our kids real-life education? Id argue that, for better or worse, in the last decade and a half, this has been a revolution the likes of which humanity has never seen. If youre worried that iPads are going to replace teachers in the classroom, Id say take a deep breath and relax. But if you think that teachers dont have their work cut our for them, competing with the globally-networked 4K cameras that kids are carrying in their pockets, then you are seriously underestimating what they do. This should not to be so easily dismissed as, oh, research shows teachers will always have the upper hand on gadgets. I think its far more complicated than that, and not necessarily true. https://youtube/watch?v=GEmuEWjHr5c#t=384
