As a former elementary school teacher, this is a hard thing to read. As a parent of brown kids who have had ONLY white teachers (until junior year of high school, when my daughter had her first teacher of color. One of two in her career in our district), I have a glimpse of what she is saying. The real point here is about the education of teachers of every race. We need to recognize that race is playing into the educational process in ways good hearted White teachers continue to deny. This, more than anything, is what must be changed.
