As a jazz trumpeter and educator (https://intotheShed), Im often asked by trumpet players about warm-ups, exercises, etc. This is a quick video from this mornings warm-up/exercise session. It is regarding lip slurs and how to make them more interesting while opening up your ears to more intervallic possibilities. I hope this short clip might inspire you to explore different ways of achieving the same physical benefits from a particular type of exercise while encouraging your creativity and music prowess. SECOND PART OF THIS VIDEO: A CONSONANT ii-V7-I IDEA https://facebook/video.php?v=10152454880913240&l=4848284526657975098 Often times Ill end my practice sessions by coming up with my own ii-V7-I line. Sometimes they are very short two bar phrases, sometimes longer, sometimes I purposefully try to find a nice line utilizing altered tones and get all out and modern with it, while other times theyre well-inside the consonant neutral/natural flavors. Most of the time, its a one-off exercise and serves to further my familiarity with neighboring chord tones and their associations to one another and I dont seek to memorize the line. Other times, I stumble upon a really nice one and Ill stay with it for days or weeks and try to get it inside my soul. With that being said, this is all for conscious, specific practicing. When it comes to the performance, I never directly depend on memorized licks and always just play in-the-moment and go for it at all costs. This video is an example of a nice inside ii-V7-I phrase. I hope this may inspire you in your practicing.
