As a jury member, director K G George manipulated the National Awards in favour of Mammootty against Mohanlal, to get his dates. George started Mahanagaram with Mammootty soon -- Sreekumaran Thampi. (Vaachaka Mela - Manorama - June 28, 2014) This is one of the most unfortunate and totally baseless statements I have heard in recent times. K G George is one of the greatest directors Malayalam Cinema has ever seen where as Sreekumaran Thampi is one of the finest lyricists of the language. No doubt. But Sri.Thampi’s contributions as a film director are nothing to write home about. K G George lived for quality cinema and more than 15 of his films are classics today. He was an honest, fearless and outspoken person and director. He spoke against Mammootty many times in public! Even after directing 19 films he has not made enough to build a house or buy a car for himself! He was never after the money but the pleasure and pain of making good cinema. The 1992 film Mahanagarm had nothing major to do with K G George as it was produced by M Mani, written by Dennis Joseph and directed By Rajeev Kumar. Knowing the deep financial troubles George was going through at that time, Mammootty included him as a namesake executive producer in it! He contributed nothing to the film but received Rs.6 lakhs from the profits! K G George wrote in his biography “it was the first time in my life I saw so much money and I got all of it for doing nothing!” K G George is suffering now from bad health after the nasty brain stroke he had couple of years ago. He may not be in a position to clarify these things but I request one and all to read his shockingly honest autobiography ‘Flashback, Enteyum Cinemayudeyum”, before believing the baseless, below the belt attack on him by Sri. Sreekumaran Thampi.
