As a kid living in northeast Lincoln, we had a neighbor who had escaped from Poland in 1937 and came to U.S. He was an aeronautical engineer and worked for Martin Aircraft Company during WWII. It was not until 1970, I knew that he has lost his entire family in Poland to the Nazis. He chose not to tell anyone about it, but I think he knew I wanted to understand what it meant. It is far more than a subject for a movie or a book, it is a terrible part of our human history that we should never forget. How many of our children know anything about the Holocaust. They sure as hell dont learn much about it in public schools. It is more likely they know about the death camps and the millions of Jews who died there but, there were just as many deaths by other groups identified by the Nazis as impure and should be exterminated. I urge you to find some way to teach your children about this attempt at genocide so they understand what that word means and the current ongoing genocides that are still in progress in Europe, Africa and parts of Asia. They may have heard of ethnic cleansing but, I doubt very much they know what it true means and how it has occurred repeatedly in our history.
