As a little girl growing up in cultures where young women are conditioned to be sweet, accommodating, polite, demure and submissive, it is incredibly hard to grow into womanhood & maintain these characteristics and thrive in the professional world. There are many people who will violate your boundaries, misconstrue your kindness for weakness and generally mistreat you. Finding a balance between the often oppressive, hyper masculine culture of technology start-ups and the disempowered stance of patriarchal Northeast African culture is essential but certainly no walk in the park.
