As a member of the Joint Armed Services Committee I recently had the opportunity to visit Fort Greely and the Missile Defense Complex (MDC). We werent allowed to take photos, but we were able to observe a threat situation and the response. The operation at Fort Greely is considered active duty as they are on 24/7/365 watch for attacks in US airspace. We learned they are currently working to add 14 to the already 26 so we will have 40 total ground based interceptors (GBI). And, by 2017 90% of the ground based midcourse defense program will be in Alaska. Our location and strategic importance can not be overstated. The big issues right now are housing and energy costs. Housing has been contracted out to be more cost efficient and they are currently working on a strategic plan for their energy future. Today Fort Greely is the most expensive installation in the Army.
