As a member of the nerd/geek community, I am often approached by people who wonder why we do the things that we do. It is because of questions like this that someone brave enough has created what I like to call a Documentary-Style Anime. Genshiken is the story of 5 college-aged students who form a club for the sole purpose of enjoying the various aspects of being an otaku (Japanese for Obsessive Nerd.) The show is basically like The Breakfast Club but with all the students representing each aspect of the otaku community. You have your cosplayer, your anime fan, your manga artist/manga reader, your video gamer, and your chairman (or Universal Nerd.) The story follows each of the characters as they deal with girlfriends trying to understand their obsession, feeling unwanted, making new friends, and even trying new hobbies. In general I would recommend this show to anyone who has wondered about why otakus do what they do. Granted I must warn you, there are some Suggestive Scenes that incorporate fanfics and pairings, but other than that it is on my list for the top 25 anime you should watch
