As a poignant contrast, the star of the original 1923 silent film Phantom of the Opera, Lon Chaney Sr, died of cancer 84 years ago yesterday, but the films last surviving cast member - dancer Carla Laemmle - died only 2 months ago, at the age of 104. Laemmle also had the distinction of delivering the first spoken lines in Dracula, 1931, the first horror talking picture. Chaney, an extraordinary character actor (the term was invented for him) was destined to be a silent movie actor, in a way, because both of his parents were deaf and he communicated with them through gesture and expression.
