As a practitioner of this fusty craft, I am forced to point that Kerman was not critic but a musicologist, whose Opera as Drama has much more of substance to offer than his crabby opinion of Tosca. Get it right, #NPR! Joseph Kerman April 3, 1924 – March 17, 2014 Dismissing Puccinis Tosca as a shabby little shocker was just one of the vibrant bon mots from a musicologist and critic who helped bring more than a little sparkle, and clear-eyed observations, into the often fusty realm of classical music criticism.
