As a proponent of immediate emancipation who condemned the United States Constitution as a pro slavery document, William Lloyd Garrison (1805–1879), a white abolitionist, received national attention when he began to publish a newspaper called The Liberator in 1831. Many white abolitionists and many members of the African American community supported Garrison. Churches, anti-slavery organizations, and wealthy blacks such as Robert Purvis, John B. Vashon, and James Forten contributed money, articles, or both to support the newspaper. Garrison published the paper until the abolition of slavery by the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865.
