As a public school teacher and a human being, I call BS on any of these stupid and soulless bureaucrats who try to justify the removal and destruction of these books. There are countless schools, community centers, cultural institutions and organizations, and public libraries across the nation which would have gladly accepted them as a gift, and perhaps even paid nominal bulk fees for them which could have covered the cost of transferring/shipping the books to new locations in this country and even throughout the world. We live in such a wasteful, culturally deficient society. Future generations will not smile upon the barbarism, stingy short-sightedness and greed we are exhibiting in this nation, still the richest in the world despite economic hard times, during this sorry phase of human history. Nor on the technological arrogance of cultural simpletons who presume to determine that our "digital environment" is impelling humankind toward the ultimate obliteration of the treasures we have preserved for thousands of years on the handwritten and printed page. Alongside the maddening images to which we have been subjected in the media of the abandonment and devastation of the city of Detroit -- our own contemporary Chichen Itza -- this story is just one more anecdote documenting the decadence of 21st Century capitalism and the Decline of the American Empire. new2000/virginia-county-library-system-destroyed-250000-of-its-own-books/
