As a reporter, my proudest accomplishment was writing the series of stories that ended up saving the Georgia-Warm Springs Hospital, which was to be closed, sold and turned into a private resort. FDRS son James, a burly Milwaukee attorney named Steve Enich and I delved into the lies, special interests and legislative duplicity that had starved and crippled the nations premier center for polio and spinal cord victims. In the end, the Gov. George Busbee, his aide Tom Perdue, the rival Shepard Spinal Clinic and private investors were defeated, and $7 million, appropriated but never released, gave the center the money it needed to operate and thrive once again. That was 30 years ago, and watching The Roosevelts tonight, I was again reminded what an important place this is, and how there will always be a place for it in history and a mission to provide innovative help for the disabled. It appears to be going stong after 90 years, now called Roosevelt Warm Springs. I urge you to visit, and the Little White House nearby. It is one of our most moving national landmarks.
