As a shareholder, the new categories stuff is interesting, since historically thats where AAPLs made the biggest gains. But as a user I hope its something so new that it replaces at least some of the mix of devices we use, rather than merely adding to them. The iPhone was important because it made the iPod obsolete. Suddenly we had everything the iPod could do, but so much more. With the iPhone, we could let the iPod go. But if these new categories include a watch, it better make toast or drive a car or something else pretty darned amazing. Because were already expected lug around a laptop, a tablet, and a phone, since each of these does something the others dont. (And personally I stopped using tablets some time ago, just opting for a lighter laptop instead; my iPad and my Asus Transformer are now just testing devices). If we have to start strapping even more computers to our wrists because weve run out of room in our backpacks and pockets, the whole thing starts to feel like Batmans utility belt, walking around with pounds of gadgets each for some specific purpose but without enough overlap to leave even a majority of them at home. I hope Im wrong.
