As a skinny, scrawny kid I soon realized that I had no need to flee from a fight. Thats because I was born with a defense mechanism that worked flawlessly--my eyes, which are an odd combination of my fathers Siberian Husky blue and my mothers very light brown topaz. From them I inherited a weird shade of green with a black rim, which worked in two ways: If I liked someone, I could draw them in almost hypnotically, or (if I wanted them to retreat) I would stand in their personal space and lock eyes. Some years ago one of the squeegee guys blocked my car outside the Lincoln Tunnel. I rolled down my window and looked at him, whereupon he raised his arms as if a gun was pointed at him and backed away slowly. They still have this weird power--positive or negative--that folks always comment on. (Its how I snagged Drew). :)
