As a songwriter, Joni Mitchell has been my number one influence as a lyricists from a young age. When I was a young rebellious teen ager of 18 prior to going to Grand Valley to study music, I was the Shipping and Receiving Clerk at “Beverly’s” downtown on Monroe. They had one elevator that was used to transport customers from floor to floor (With an elevator operator “Fran”, sweetest lady who made the best chili). When I would get shipments in I had to get them from the street to the 3rd floor via the elevator. So Fran would park herself by a card table in the basement (she always fell asleep) and I would commandeer the elevator. The elevator had an open gated front and you could see the walls go by as you went up or down. Now being a young rebellious teen and loving Joni, and feeling I was “Working for the man” I wrote this on the wall between the second and third floors. – Battalions of paper minded males Talking commodities and sales while at home their paper wives and paper kids Paper the walls to keep their gut reactions hid I wonder if it’s still there. Part of me sure hopes so.
