As a student of color that identifies as black I need to be honest about the recent ways that UCSC has been trying to be in solidarity with the black community. I just want to start by saying I appreciate all that people are doing to try and get justice for so many people. Its a really nice thought to know that I have so many supportive students on campus. However, I believe most people are doing it just because it seems like a good thing to do and not because they truly care. I also feel like generalizing the black community to include all people that look black isnt right. Youre doing the same things that cops are. I have friends that identify as African and not black so with #blacklivesmatter where do they fall? Lastly, I know these past weeks have had a lot of publicity dealing with this issue but remember that the media will move on. There will be bigger stories and you will all get worked up about another issue. Just remember that we will still be black. Just because this issue is relevant now dont forget that this is an issue that we have to deal with everyday of our lives. So I appreciate all the efforts and the support, I just want you all to realize that if this much energy was being put into the issue all year long then maybe there would be real change in the world.
