As a travel editor/writer, I just received this message. Wow. My lifestyles journalist and human rights activist lives rarely come together, but here it does. Weird. "We are writing to update you about the escalating labor dispute at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Picket lines and demonstrations by union workers and community supporters at the Cosmopolitan could negatively impact the customer experience at this high-end Strip resort. The Cosmopolitan has now been added to the list of Las Vegas casino resorts with an active labor dispute. (See the VegasTravelAlert.org website). Since January, the Cosmopolitan has been the site of picket lines and demonstrations attended by thousands of people. We have also commenced regular picket lines on the sidewalks of the Cosmopolitan, starting this past weekend. (See this news story.) Workers at the Cosmopolitan have been seeking a first contract since September, 2011. They want the same opportunity to provide for themselves and their families that other union workers enjoy on the Las Vegas Strip. Our union has proposed contract language on job security and workload based on the Union Standard on the Strip. We have not been able to reach a settlement after nearly two years of talks. We ask that you alert your readers of the possible disruptions to their travel and meeting plans in Las Vegas if they choose to go to the Cosmopolitan. In order to choose a labor-peaceful alternative venue in Las Vegas, please contact me immediately at 702-290-8179, or by email at [email protected].
