As a writer, I keep stumbling upon the same argument over why a characters actions need to be justified; the simple fact is, they dont. Sure, everything is better to understand when its neatly packaged into perfectly swallowable chunks, but real life isnt like that. Real people arent like that. Sometimes we dont know why people act the way they do - sometimes they dont even know themselves. Its the uncertainty that we find difficult to cope with, but still we manage to muddle through. We accept that not everything has to be explained or rationalised to a tee, so why cant we do the same with fiction? Do we need a reason for everything? Discuss.
